No, i downloaded itunes 7 and everything was the same on my ipod when i went to sync my new songs

No, it’s just a simple upgrade in your software. I have done it before, and all of my songs have been left alone, right where they were laying before.

No. It is not part of the install to resynchronize your entire library of songs. However, with earlier iTune release (v 1-5) I had consistent problems with iTunes preferences (it did not save the preferences from the earlier version) and the first iPod synch. But it seems to be much more reliable with the later versions.
I like iTunes 7 a lot. The new features are worth the update.
